Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, is reportedly being held in ‘poor condition’ within the Attock jail and provided with ‘C-class facilities’, according to his counsel Naeem Haider Panjotha.

As per a report by the Pakistani news outlet Geo News, Panjotha revealed the conditions after meeting with Imran Khan in Attock Jail on Monday.

Panjotha has raised concerns about the facilities provided to Khan, stating that he is being kept in a C-class cell that is infested with flies and bugs. Despite these circumstances, Khan has expressed his readiness to spend the remainder of his life in prison, his lawyer said.

“The PTI chairman says he is ready to spend the remainder of his life in jail,” Panjotha told reporters.

Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 following his conviction by a district and sessions court in the Toshakhana corruption case. Despite the conviction, Khan denies the allegations. Khan was removed from the Prime Ministerial position in April 2022, after losing a no-confidence in the Parliament.

Detailing the circumstances of Khan’s detention, chief counsel Panjotha revealed that the PTI chairman was placed in a small room ‘which has an open washroom’. Additionally, Khan alleged that the police did not show him an arrest warrant while detaining him from his Lahore house, and attempted to break the door and forcefully enter his wife Bushra Bibi’s room during his arrest.

Imran Khan also wanted to be allowed to meet his wife while in prison, the lawyer said. Panjotha also stated that an appeal against the trial court verdict will be filed on Tuesday, with Khan having signed the power of attorney for the legal action.

Imran Khan entitled to A-class facilities: PTI chief’s counsel

In response to the conditions in Attock jail, the PTI petitioned the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday to transfer Imran Khan from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail, arguing that his ‘education, habits and social and political status’ warrant better or ‘A-class’ facilities.

“Since childhood, the petitioner [Imran Khan] is from an affluent family, and later due to his education, habits, and social and political status in the society, has got accustomed to a better mode of life… [he] is a graduate of Oxford University, UK and [was] the … captain of Pakistan national Cricket [team]…,” the PTI’s petition read.

“Keeping in view the petitioner’s social and political status, his education, and his being accustomed to a better living style, the Petitioner was entitled to A-class facilities in terms of Rule 243 read with Rule 248 of Pakistan Prison Rules,” it added.
