Pakistan Elections 2024: In a bold move, the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja following reports of widespread rigging in the recently concluded elections on February 8.
PTI has escalated its demands by calling for the resignation of all members of the election commission, citing violations of the constitution. The party alleges that the formation of coalition governments by Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is based on rigged elections.
Gohar Ali Khan, a prominent leader of PTI, had earlier expressed confidence in the party's ability to form the government in the Centre as well as in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also proposed the possibility of an alliance with Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen.
PTI activists have taken to the streets across the country, staging demonstrations to voice their concerns. In Rawalpindi, protesters gathered outside the district election commissioner’s office, chanting slogans amidst tight security provided by police and security personnel.
The Election Commission of Pakistan announced the results earlier in the day, revealing that Independents backed by PTI secured 101 out of 264 seats. Notably, elections for 264 seats were concluded, while one seat remained vacant due to the demise of a candidate.
To secure a government, parties must attain a minimum of 133 seats out of the 265 contested in the National Assembly. Nawaz Sharif’s proposal for an alliance government, aimed at addressing Pakistan's ongoing economic crisis, has garnered support from the Army.
