Tarek Fatah, a Pakistani-Canadian writer and renowned television personality, died on Monday after a protracted battle with cancer, according to his daughter Natasha Fatah, a fellow journalist. He was 73.

Taking to Twitter his daughter Natasha wrote, ”Lion of Punjab.Son of Hindustan.Lover of Canada.Speaker of truth.Fighter for justice.Voice of the downtrodden, underdogs, and the oppressed. @TarekFatah has passed the baton on… his revolution will continue with all who knew and loved him. Will you join us?”

Tarek Fatah was born in Karachi, Pakistan on November 20, 1949. Early in the 1980s, he moved to Canada where he worked as a political activist, journalist, and television personality. He also wrote numerous books, including “The Jew is Not My Enemy: Unveiling the Myths that Fuel Muslim Anti-Smitism” and “Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State.”

Fatah was renowned for both his vehement stance against Pakistan and his reformist ideas on Islam. He identified as a “Punjabi born into Islam” and an “Indian born in Pakistan.”

Soon after his death, tributes poured on social media. Taking to Twitter actor Ranveer Shorey, “Deeply saddened to know this. He was one of the bravest & wisest people I have known. May his noble soul rest with the Almighty in heaven. He did more than his share of good in this world. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family, and his countless admirers across the world.”

Fatah was an award-winning reporter, columnist, and radio and television commentator.

The Canadian author was well-known for his liberal perspectives on terrorism and Islam. Tarek Fatah, who was well-known for his vehement views on Pakistan, frequently declared his support for the BJP-led NDA administration at the national level.

The Indian filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri also shared his grief by taking to Twitter, he wrote, “There was one and only @TarekFatah – daring, funny, knowledgeable, sharp thinker, great orator and a fearless fighter. Tarek, my brother, it was a delight to have you as a close friend. Will you be able to rest in peace? Om Shanti.”
