Emergency Management Services said another 43 people were injured in the blaze, which broke out in the wee hours on Thursday, news agency Associated Press reported. Meanwhile, the injured people were rushed to the hospital immediately after they were rescued by the team.

“We are now on 63 fatalities and 43 people injured who were transported to various healthcare facilities,” said Emergency Management Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

Death toll may incident, while rescue ops still on

Moreover, the authorities said that firefighters have been largely doused the fire and rescue operation is still underway.

Taking notes from the situation, Mulaudzi said. “We are moving floor by floor conducting these body recoveries, while the death toll might increase.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown, the officials are probing into this matter.

The building, which has now been evacuated, is located in a deprived area of what used to be the business district of South Africa’s economic hub, and was used as an informal settlement, Mulaudzi said.

Footages of the incident showed fire trucks and ambulances outside the red and white building with all burnt-out windows, which had been cordoned off by the police personnel.
