New Delhi: Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, renowned as the "banker to the poor," will return to Bangladesh on Thursday to assume the role of head of the interim government. Yunus, who will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:10 PM local time on an Emirates flight from Dubai, is set to be sworn in at 8 PM the same day. This appointment follows the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus’s Return After Legal Victory

Muhammad Yunus's return comes after his recent acquittal in a labor law violations case. Yunus had been sentenced to six months in prison earlier this year for alleged labor law breaches and corruption charges. His acquittal allows him to take on this significant role during a period of national turmoil.

Yunus Urges for Peace and Reconstruction

In light of the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, Yunus has called for an end to the unrest. "Our youth is ready to give this leadership to create a new world. Let us not miss the chance by going into any senseless violence. Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country," Yunus stated, as reported by United News of Bangladesh.

Police strike continues amid chaos

The situation in Bangladesh remains dire with ongoing violence, including looting and attacks on the Hindu minority. The police force, which went on strike on Tuesday, has not yet resumed duties. New Bangladesh Police Association President Muhammad Abdullahhel Baki mentioned that the police would soon return to service, criticizing the previous administration for politicizing the force.

On Wednesday, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) appointed a new chief, Abul Kalam Mohammad Shahidur Rahman, while the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) welcomed Muhammad Mainul Hasan as its new commissioner.
