New Delhi: Addressing concerns about India's stance on the Ukraine conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the global silence regarding India's own territorial disputes. During his visit to Japan, Jaishankar pointed out the selective application of principles by certain countries, highlighting India's historical experiences of aggression and territorial challenges.
Jaishankar critiqued the tendency of nations to cherry-pick principles based on their interests, underscoring the need for consistent application of international norms. He emphasized that while India faces ongoing territorial challenges, the world's response has been inconsistent, especially when it comes to acknowledging principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In the same context, Jaishankar underscored the imperative for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He noted the outdated structure of the UNSC, established when the global landscape was vastly different, and stressed the necessity for adapting to contemporary geopolitical realities.
Jaishankar acknowledged the resistance to change within the UNSC, particularly referencing China's opposition to India's inclusion as a permanent member. He lamented the obstacles hindering meaningful discussions on reform, attributing the delays to vested interests opposed to altering the status quo.
Responding to queries about his potential participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Jaishankar deferred to the party leadership's decision. While affirming his current position as a member of the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of adhering to political decisions made by party leadership.
Jaishankar reiterated India's sovereign right to procure oil from Russia, despite external pressure. His defense follows Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's commendation of India's stance on oil imports, citing India's commitment to national dignity and autonomy in decision-making.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, Jaishankar's statements underscore India's nuanced approach to international relations and its unwavering commitment to safeguarding national interests.
