Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan takes a dig at the European Union before an inaugural session of parliament on Sunday. He said that his country has no more expectations out of the international body which has kept Turkey from entering the union for more than four decades, as per media reports.

“We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU but they have kept almost none of theirs,” Erdogan said.

Commenting further on this issue, the Turkish President said that he will not “tolerate” if the EU puts forward “any new demands or conditions on the accession process” for his country to join the bloc.

Erdogan not happy with ECHR’s decision

This comment is also a reaction to the European Union’s judgment on Tuesday which condemned Turkey for convicting a teacher named Yuksel Yalcinkaya, in the wake of the 2016 attempted coup on the grounds he had downloaded an encrypted messaging app linked with the alleged plotters.

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) held Turkey responsible for unfair trial violations and said that Yalcinkaya’s rights were violated because the case against him relied mostly on his use of an encrypted messaging application.

Turkey on the other hand blames the group led by the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen as the mastermind of the failed attempt to oust Erdogan in 2016. The government alleged that the app was used exclusively by supporters of Fethullah Gulen to coordinate the plot.

“(Turkey) will not turn back in its fight against this band of traitors,” President Erdogan said.

Turkey terror attack

A bomb attack was carried out in the Ankara area near the Parliament of Turkey which left two police officers injured on Sunday. Two terrorists arrived in a commercial vehicle in front of the Interior Ministry buildings and set off an explosion in home to ministerial buildings and parliament, the interior ministry said.

One of the attackers died in the act while another one was neutralised, as per the statement of Ali Yerlikaya, an official in the interior ministry.

The attack took place just few hours ahead of the the Turkish parliament reconvened for a new term.
