She is the third Indian American to launch a Presidential bid. Bobby Jindal in 2016 and Kamala Harris in 2020 were the other Indian-American candidates. Kamala Harris is now serving as Vice President of the country.Dr. Anil Yallapragada, who grew up in South Carolina and has lived there for the past three decades with his parents, described Haley as an extraordinary and special person. “The Indian American community is proud of her, and she represents the finest and brightest of us,” he said. He also mentioned that we want the right person to lead the country, and there are very few of them, and she is one of them.According to Dr. Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education and senior advisor to the National Sikh Campaign, it is a proud moment for people of colour in America that a first-generation American of Sikh descent is vying for the highest office in the country. “You may disagree with her on her policies and political views but it is still a remarkable journey. Her father is a proud Sikh who wears a turban and attended her inauguration ceremony when she was elected governor of South Carolina,” Singh said.He added that there is still a misconception of Sikhs and their identities among the majority of Americans.
