(Update 7:17 pm): The death count for the nightclub fire in Spain’s Murcia has risen to 13 as per the latest reports. Authorities fear that the number of deaths could still rise as rescue operations continue.

Fire broke out at “Teatre” nightclub where a birthday party was being held on Saturday night, police say. According to media reports the injured belong to countries including France, Britain, Romania and Belgium

According to initial information, the fire broke out on the first floor of the nightclub, which has a ground floor and a first floor,” Diego Seral, the national police spokesman told radio Onda Regional de Murcia.

Nightclub fire kills 7 in Spain’s Murcia

A fire broke out in the Teatre nightclub in Murcia of southern Spain on Sunday morning killing seven people as confirmed by the Mayor of the city. Murcia emergency services have also said that the death count was likely to increase.

According to media reports, the emergency services have said that the rescuers had managed to enter the building after they were alerted at 6:00 a.m. local time that a fire had broken out in the nightclub.

The Mayor of Murcia José Ballesta also wrote on X(Twitter) “The number of deaths inside the Atalayas nightclub rises to 7. Emergency services continue to work in the area. Strength and encouragement to family and friends in these difficult times.”

The emergency services are also said to be looking for missing people as well as those who were on the premises at the time. Moreover, four people are being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
