Taking a significant step, the New York Police late on Tuesday arrested the pro-Palestinian demonstrators at Columbia University in Manhattan who were marking a dramatic increase in tensions on campus. The students had taken over Hamilton Hall and had been living there in a tent encampment for about two weeks when law police intervened. The police involvement came after Mayor Eric Adams made a clear declaration earlier in the day that the ongoing protest "must end now."

According to the sources, Columbia University said that this was the second instance of calling the police in a week. Nemat Shafik, the President of the University has asked the New York Police Department to maintain a presence on campus through at least May 17 to prevent further encampments or occupations.
