Northeastern United States experienced heavy rainfall which drowned parts of New York under water on Friday, disrupting communication throughout the city. Subways and airports in New York got partially paralyzed the in America’s financial capital. Emergency has also been declared in the city as New York experiences one of its wettest days in decades.

Visuals throughout the internet showed passengers walking through water in LaGuardia airport in New York which has closed down one of it’s terminals due to water logging in the airport. Pictures also show cars half submerge on New York roads and extensive traffic jams creating difficulty bin movement.

New York authorities urge staying indoor

Mayor Eric Adams has also urged people to stay indoor and avoid venturing out much. He said “If you are home, stay home. If you are at work or school, shelter in place for now, some of our subways are flooded and it’s extremely difficult to move around the city .”

New York Governor,Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley while aksing residents to  to plan their “escape routes” and not wait till water. levels “crossed their knees”

She also said that it was of utmost importance to get the subway running again since it is the main source of transportation for students to get to and from school.

 President Antonio Reynoso of Brooklyn Borough  also made a statement saying that this incident highlighst the need for an improved process of communication “with New Yorkers about sudden and extreme weather before it happens.”

Sea lion escapes New York Zoo

The flooding also helped a sea lion escape from it’s Central Park Zoo pool, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. The flooding in the plaza helped the animal climb out if its cage, though it still remained inside the zoo’s outer perimeter.

“Zoo staff monitored the sea lion as she explored the area before returning to the familiar surroundings of the pool and the company of the other two sea lions,” Jim Breheny, Director of the Bronx Zoo and Executive Vice President of the WSZ’s Zoos and Aquarium, said.

More rainfall is expected as well as predicted by the National Weather Service .
