Netanyahu rescue planes for football fans: Following reports of violent clashes in Amsterdam during a football match, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dispatched two planes to bring home affected fans, while urging Dutch authorities to ensure their safety.
In response to violent clashes in Amsterdam that injured Israeli football fans, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday ordered two rescue planes to the Netherlands. Netanyahu called on Dutch authorities to take strong and immediate action against the perpetrators, while his office issued a statement condemning the incident and requesting heightened protection for Israeli citizens.
The altercation occurred on Thursday evening during a Europa League match between Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Dutch team Ajax Amsterdam. According to local Dutch media AT5, tensions escalated in the city center, resulting in multiple violent encounters and acts of vandalism. A significant police presence was noted, with mobile units and additional reinforcements deployed to contain the unrest.
Following the clashes, Amsterdam police reported that approximately 57 people had been detained. In a social media post, the police issued an alert regarding the charged atmosphere, noting that a Palestinian flag had been forcibly removed from a building, adding to the tensions.
Israel’s National Security Ministry responded swiftly, advising Israeli citizens to remain in their hotels. Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir commented on X, stating, “Fans who attended a football game encountered anti-Semitic violence, targeted simply for their Jewish and Israeli identity.”
