Sita Dahal, the wife of the Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal, passed away aged 69 on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest, hospital authorities have confirmed.

Sita Dahal was suffering from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disorder, for a long time. She was admitted to the Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu after her oxygen levels decreased on Wednesday, according to Kathmandu-based news outlet My Republica.

However, she suffered a cardiac arrest and despite the best efforts of the doctors to resuscitate her, she passed away at 8:33 AM.

“Ms. Sita Dahal, 69 yrs/female, known case of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Parkinsonism, Diabetes Mellitus-ll and Hypertension under (on/off) Domicillary oxygen with PEG feeding and indwelling catheter went to cardiac arrest at 8 am,” Norvic Hospital said in a statement.

Nepal PM helped by daughters as wife’s body is taken from hospital

Prime Minister Dahal, also known as Prachanda, was at the Norvic Hospital as his wife’s mortal remains were taken for the funeral rites. He was surrounded by his daughters, Rehu and Ganga, who supported their emotional father.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences to his Nepalese counterpart.

He wrote, “Extremely saddened to learn about the demise of Mrs. Sita Dahal. I express my sincere condolences to @cmprachanda and pray that the departed soul finds eternal peace. Om Shanti.”
