In the Bagmati district of Nepal, a passenger bus went off the major route and plummeted into a flooded river on Wednesday, killing at least eight passengers and injuring at least 19 others.

More on the mishap

In Nepal, where mountains occupy most of the land, poorly maintained cars and roads are mostly to blame for traffic accidents. The mishap occurred when the bus, traveling from Kathmandu to the picturesque resort of Pokhara, swerved off course and plunged into the Trishuli River near Chalise in the province’s Dhading district.

Authorities speak up

During a conversation with myRepublica.com, Deputy Superintendent of Police Santulal Prasad Jaiswal mentioned about the incident by saying, “In the accident, at least eight people have been killed and 15 more injured. The number of those killed might go up. Rescue is ongoing.” He also added that shortly after the collision, the bus became partially submerged in the Trishuli River, but rescuers were still able to extract several of the passengers alive.
