World News: On Thursday, Indian national Sai Varshith Kandula, 20, received an eight-year prison sentence for his attempted attack on the White House using a rented truck on May 22, 2023. Kandula pleaded guilty to willful injury or depredation of U.S. property on May 13, 2024. Originally from Chandanagar, India, he was a lawful permanent resident of the United States with a green card. Alongside his prison term, District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich mandated three years of supervised release following his incarceration.On the day of the attack, Kandula traveled from St. Louis, Missouri, to Washington D.C., arriving at Dulles International Airport around 5:20 PM.
He rented a truck shortly after at 6:30 PM and proceeded to stop for food and gas before heading toward the White House. At approximately 9:35 PM, he crashed into the security barriers surrounding the White House and President's Park at the intersection of H Street Northwest and 16th Street Northwest.
Witnesses reported that Kandula drove onto the sidewalk, prompting pedestrians to flee in fear. After initially crashing into the barriers, he reversed and struck them again, causing significant damage that disabled his vehicle. Emerging from the truck, Kandula retrieved a three-by-five-foot flag emblazoned with a Nazi Swastika and brandished it prominently before being apprehended by U.S. Park Police and Secret Service agents.
According to court documents, Kandula's intention was to seize political power by infiltrating the White House. The plea agreement revealed that he had expressed a willingness to kill the U.S. President and others if necessary to achieve his goals. His actions were characterized as calculated attempts to intimidate and coerce government officials.
The Department of Justice reported that Kandula's actions resulted in approximately $4,322 in damages to National Park Service property. This figure encompasses repairs to the metal bollard barriers and cleanup costs associated with oil and chemical spills from the vehicle.Kandula had meticulously planned this attack for several weeks prior to executing it.
He made multiple attempts to secure vehicles or armed security personnel in preparation for his assault.
