The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Monday announced its lunar mission, Artemis II, next year. According to the sources, four astronauts will be introduced during this mission, who will be part of mission. This will be the first crewed moon mission in the past fifty years.

The training for the astronauts for this mission will now begin for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby. The mission is scheduled to launch in November, of next year. The four-member team will include one Canadian and three Americans on the crew. As part of the Artemis II mission, it will launch into space, orbit the Moon, and then land on Earth. By the end of the expedition, humans will have travelled the longest distance in space. The Artemis II mission will set the foundation for Artemis III’s ultimate aim, a lunar landing.

The four of them will embark on the extraordinary space journey in 2024. The three US nationals are Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and a Canadian astronaut is Jeremy Hansen. On Monday, NASA unveiled a group photo of the crew members.

More about the four-member crew

Christina Koch

This is the first time when a woman astronaut has been selected for the mission, Christina Koch, who is also the world’s most experienced spacewalker and the first African American ever assigned as an astronaut, made the lunar mission exceptional.

Reid Wiseman

Reid Wiseman, a 47-year-old decorated naval aviator, will be another extraordinary member of the mission from NASA, he is also a test pilot who was selected as an astronaut for the space organisation in 2009. In this mission, he will serve as commander of the mission Artemis II.

Jeremy Hansen

Hansen, aged 47 years, is a fighter pilot who was selected by the Canadian Space Agency for astronaut training in 2009. Notably, he is the first-ever Canadian to travel to extensive space.

Victor Glover

Glover made his first space trip in 2021. A 46-year-old astronaut, utilising SpaceX’s Crew Dragon for its second crewed flight and residing at the International Space Station for nearly six months.

According to the information, until now, 12 astronauts have stepped on the moon mission, and all of them were white men. Reportedly, this is the first time a non-US national is part of the Moon mission. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has called them ‘The Humanity crew’.

These four astronauts will be in the Space Launch System (SLS), the most potent rocket ever created, in the Orion spacecraft. Orion will launch into space once the SLS blasts off. The Orion would travel for around ten days before returning to Earth.

NASA selected its first Artemis crew from 41 currently employed astronauts. Four candidates were from Canada. Nearly all of them attended the ceremony on Monday at Ellington Field of the Johnson Space Center, which was a type of pep rally and culminated with Wiseman leading the crowd in a chant.

Joe Biden spoke to the astronauts

United States president Joe Biden, spoke to astronauts and their families on Sunday. Taking to Twitter, Biden said, “Will inspire the next generation of explorers.” The White House is completely involved in the mission. Kamala Harris is the National Space Council’s chairperson. Vice President Kamala Harris was present at the launch site when Artemis I, which opened the path for Artemis II and later Artemis III, was launched. However, due to technical difficulties, the launch was postponed both that day and numerous times after that.

The unnamed test mission Artemis I, which culminated in December and sent NASA’s Orion Capsule on a 1.4 million-mile voyage to orbit the moon, will be considerably enhanced by the Artemis II mission.
