Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, along with his wife Bushra Bibi have been summoned by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in relation to Toshakhana and National Crime Agency (NCA) £190 million scandal.

According to local media reports, Bushra Bibi has been called to appear before NAB authorities in Rawalpindi on December 11th and provide jewellery items including a gold necklace, diamond ring and bracelet. These are believed to be among numerous gifts received by Imran Khan during his 2018-2022 premiership which were not declared to Toshakhana in procedure.

Bushra Bibi's name has also recently been added to Pakistan's Exit Control List barring overseas travel, on the recommendation of NAB. This relates to a separate ongoing investigation into £190 million in funds transferred to accounts associated with Khan from abroad.

Disqualification of Imran Khan

The former cricketer-turned-politician was disqualified in August this year from holding public office for five years. This followed his conviction for falsely declaring details of gifts retained from Toshakhana while in power.

The Islamabad count found Imran Khan guilty of "corrupt practises by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer wilfully and intentionally," as per media reports.

Citing the trial court’s order the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared Imran disqualified under Article 63(1h) of the Constitution, read with Section 232 of the Elections Act, 2017.

Imran Khan against the court’s decision

The former PM challenged the disqualification in the Lahore High Court (LHC), urging suspension of the Election Commission of Pakistan's ruling. However, he currently remains barred from contesting elections.

The Toshakhana gift retention controversy has been a significant political issue in recent years. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party lost power in a vote of no-confidence in April 2022. He claims his ouster was illegitimate and the result of a "foreign conspiracy."

Legal cases continue in multiple forums. Supporters of Imran Khan insist he is being unfairly targeted by successors and establishment figures. The PTI retains a sizable base demonstrated in recent protest rallies.
