Several explosions rocked the area near the United States Consulate in Iraq’s Erbil, according to an Iraqi security source cited by ABC News.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted the "headquarters of spies" and "anti-Iranian terrorist gatherings" using ballistic missiles.

The IRGC said the strikes were in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike near Damascus last week that killed two of its members.

Iraqi security officials reported at least four deaths from the IRGC bombing in Erbil. No American or coalition forces were killed, the source confirmed.

Iraqi forces intercepted and shot down three drones near Erbil airport during the attack. Air traffic has been halted in the city amid the ongoing security situation. Officials said eight locations close to the US Consulate compound were impacted by the IRGC strikes.

Further details are still emerging about the extent of damage and casualties from the rare attack in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region.
