A woman from Michigan has been charged with murdering her 17-year-old son just days before he was set to celebrate his 18th birthday. The accused, identified as 39-year-old Katie Lee, allegedly stated that her son expressed a desire to end his life. Court records indicate that Lee is facing charges of open murder and resisting arrest.

Tragic incident in Holland

On February 21, officers from the Holland Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at Lee’s home. Upon their arrival, they found her wielding a knife. Law enforcement had to use a taser in order to subdue her. In the apartment, they discovered the deceased body of 17-year-old Austin Dean Pickart, who was Lee's son.

As reported by WZZM and WOOD, earlier that morning Lee placed a call to emergency services in which she stated she had been trying for "some time" to stop Austin from breathing but without success.

Disturbing allegations uncovered

Investigators have suggested that Lee purportedly engaged in a drug overdose alongside her son as part of what she described as a suicide pact. When Austin became unconscious, it is alleged that she used a knife to cut his throat and wrists. According to WOOD’s report, she later indicated to police that she wanted them to kill her so she could be reunited with her son.

Did the teen wish for death?

During court proceedings on February 24, an investigator testified about Lee's assertion that Austin requested assistance in order not to breathe anymore because he feared turning 18. However, this claim has not been substantiated by authorities. At this time, Lee has pleaded not guilty and was denied bail; online records show that another court appearance is scheduled for March 4.
