United States: A biting Arctic blast has plunged the United States into freezing temperatures, leaving millions in dangerous conditions. The National Weather Service issued warnings for the northeast, with forecasts of near-blizzard conditions in Buffalo, New York, due to heavy snowfall and wind gusts reaching 50 mph. Wind chills could dip as low as -70°F (-56°C) in Montana and the Dakotas.

Widespread disruptions

The authorities also warned residents to stay off the roads, particularly in Buffalo. The severe weather forced the postponement of the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers NFL playoff game, disappointing football fans nationwide. Airports across the country also felt the storm's impact, with numerous flight cancellations and delays at major hubs like Chicago O'Hare, Denver International, and Seattle-Tacoma.

Arctic storm impact states

According to the reports from the Associated Press, another Arctic storm system pushing south from the Rockies threatened to bring 4-6 inches of snow to parts of Arkansas, northern Mississippi, and west Tennessee. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency to prioritize essential supplies and facilitate quicker response to potential power outages.

Power outage in the States

Heavy snow and ice storms caused widespread power outages, leaving over 150,000 homes and businesses in Oregon without electricity. Similar disruptions affected tens of thousands across Michigan and Wisconsin. The harsh weather led to several deaths in Oregon, including a hypothermia fatality in Portland and an RV fire triggered by a heating stove that claimed the life of a woman. Another death was reported in Lake Oswego when a falling tree struck a home, killing an older resident.

Earlier in the week, weather-related fatalities were reported in California, Idaho, Illinois, and Wisconsin, highlighting the seriousness of this nationwide cold snap.
