Myanmar’s military regime has been accused of carrying out a horrific act against civilians during an attack on a village festival. The military regime said it was targeting terrorists, but among the 186 slain were mostly women and children, the youngest of whom was only six months old.

The incident on April 11 was the bloodiest since the junta took control two years ago. According to Aung Myo Min, Minister of Human Rights, Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG), a shadow administration of evicted parliamentarians, 40 of the victims were under the age of 18.

What happened on April 11?

The families had gathered in Pazigyi for breakfast at the occasion, which was a social gathering to celebrate the opening of a public administration hall. According to witnesses, over 300 people were in attendance with children playing and people conversing and drinking tea. According to various survivors and activist groups on the ground, junta fighter jets dropped two bombs on the gathering at 7:45 a.m., after which a Mi35 helicopter circled for 15 minutes, firing shots at the injured and those attempting to rescue them. According to witnesses, a military helicopter returned just before sunset, firing at those who had come to bury the dead.

Endless bloodsheds by the military junta

Since overthrowing the democratically elected government in February 2021, the junta has gradually turned its powerful weapons against the people it formerly protected. The military employed air power to destroy a resistance movement devoted to deposing the military and restoring democracy. Civilians, schools, hospitals, and houses have all been attacked. According to Myanmar’s Ambassador to the UN, Kyaw Min Tun, who speaks for the NUG, the military carried out 56 airstrikes between January and March 2021.

Foreign support of military junta

According to the report published in 2022 by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, member states such as Russia and China have been giving the junta weaponry since the coup, which might have been used to assault civilians. According to the article, these include fighter jets, armoured vehicles, and air defence systems.

The military destroyed a school and a church in neighbouring Chin state the day before the Sagaing strike, killing nine people, including the school’s principal, his wife, and their son.
