New Delhi: Microsoft experienced another global outage, which affected several of its products, including Outlook email service and the popular video game Minecraft. The company announced that the issue has been resolved. They also revealed that the cyberattack caused the outage, along with a failure in their defense mechanisms.

What is the impact of outage?

The outage lasted nearly 10 hours, causing disruption for thousands of users worldwide. This incident comes two weeks after another major outage, which affected around 8.5 million computers running Microsoft systems. Previous outage impacted critical sectors such as healthcare and travel. According to CrowdStrike, the outrage occurred due to flawed software update by the cybersecurity firm.

Microsoft's statement on new outage

According to an update on Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform, the initial cause was a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. However, their initial investigations suggest that an error in their defense implementation amplified the attack's impact rather than mitigating it. The update stated, "While the initial trigger event was a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack... initial investigations suggest that an error in the implementation of our defenses amplified the impact of the attack rather than mitigating it."

Microsoft has stated that a fix has been implemented to address the problem, which shows signs of improvement. The tech giant reassured users that they are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a full recovery. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft expressed its regret, stating, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."

Who was affected?

The outage impacted services dependent on Microsoft's platforms, disrupting communication and productivity for businesses and individuals alike. Services like Outlook and Minecraft, which rely heavily on Microsoft's infrastructure, were among those most majorly affected.
