The relief was palpable in the Akeo's voices as they stepped onto American soil. After a harrowing month spent in a Mexican prison, Paul and Christy Akeo, a Michigan couple in their sixties, were finally home. Their ordeal, which began on March 4th in Cancun, had been a nightmare of bureaucratic entanglement and harsh prison conditions.

How Troubles Originated ?

Their troubles originated from a 2021 timeshare agreement with Palace Elite, a subsidiary of The Palace Company. The Akeos maintained that the company had failed to uphold its contractual obligations, prompting them to dispute the charges with their credit card company.

This seemingly straightforward financial disagreement escalated dramatically when they arrived in Cancun, leading to their arrest on fraud charges.

Had To Face Hardships In The Subsequent Weeks
The subsequent weeks were a blur of confusion and hardship. The Akeos found themselves thrust into a foreign prison system, navigating language barriers and enduring deplorable conditions. "We had no access to phones, internet," Paul Akeo recounted, his voice still tinged with disbelief. Christy added, "They told you what to do and when to do it." Compounding their distress, they were separated for a week, further isolating them and hindering their ability to communicate with authorities.

How This Reparation Became Possible ?
Their release was secured through a reparation agreement with The Palace Company. The criminal charges were dropped, contingent upon the Akeos paying for damages. These funds were designated for distribution among three non-profit organizations. While the financial burden was significant, the Akeos viewed it as a necessary step to regain their freedom.

Couple Thanked US Officials
The couple expressed profound gratitude for the intervention of US officials, particularly Congressman Tom Barrett and Special Envoy Adam Boehler. Their efforts proved instrumental in navigating the complex legal landscape and facilitating the couple's release.

Huge Support From Community

The Akeos acknowledged the overwhelming support they received from their community and beyond. "I don’t even know how we’re going to repay or thank people," Christy said, overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness.
As they settled back into their Michigan home, the Akeos faced the daunting task of processing their traumatic experience.

The month-long ordeal had left an indelible mark, but their resilience and the support they received had ultimately brought them home. While the legal and financial ramifications were significant, the Akeos were focused on healing and moving forward, grateful for the simple comforts of home and the unwavering support that had brought them there.
