International News: In a recent turn of events, Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir has ignited a new controversy by labeling Kashmir as the "lifeline" of Pakistan.Speaking to a group of overseas Pakistanis in Islamabad, Munir reiterated Pakistan's deep-rooted stance on Kashmir, portraying it as a core element of the country’s identity. His remarks also brought the contentious two-nation theory back into public discourse, further straining relations in the region.
During his speech, Munir emphasized that Pakistan was established because Muslims in the subcontinent were fundamentally different from Hindus in terms of religion, culture, mindset, and aspirations. He emphasized that this ideological divide served as the basis for the two-nation theory and provided justification for the 1947 partition.
Speaking on Kashmir, he asserted that the region has always been an inseparable part of Pakistan’s soul and will continue to be so. He announced that Pakistan would never step back from supporting the Kashmiri people's struggle, describing the issue as an emotional and ideological foundation for the nation.
India wasted no time in issuing a strong response. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal questioned the logic of Munir’s metaphor by asking, “How can something that doesn’t belong to you be your nerve?” He reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India and emphasized that Pakistan’s only connection to the region is its illegal occupation of a part of it — which it must vacate. India also warned that such statements are an attempt to mislead the global community and will not change the reality on the ground.
Observers believe Munir's remarks are not just about foreign policy but are also tied to Pakistan’s internal political and economic challenges. With the country facing significant financial distress, the military leadership seems to be turning to nationalist rhetoric to maintain cohesion and distract from domestic issues. By appealing to overseas Pakistanis and invoking emotionally charged narratives, the military appears to be reinforcing its dominant role in national affairs while trying to rally support beyond its borders.
General Munir also addressed the ongoing issues in Balochistan and the threat of terrorism. He assured that the Pakistan Army is fully prepared to confront these threats and emphasized the military’s resolve. In a bold statement, he remarked, “If a 1.3 million-strong Indian army could not intimidate us, terrorists won’t either.”
General Munir’s recent address underscores Pakistan’s enduring focus on the Kashmir dispute, portraying it as a unifying cause for the nation and a means to reaffirm the military's dominant position within the country’s political landscape.
In contrast, India’s strong diplomatic reaction underscores its unwavering commitment to protecting its territorial integrity. The message is clear: outdated claims and provocative language cannot change the ground realities.
