New Delhi: Juli Vavilova, a gamer, streamer, and crypto coach, has found herself at the center of controversy following the recent arrest of Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram. Known for her online presence, Vavilova was reportedly seen with Durov in the days leading up to his arrest, fueling speculation that her social media activity might have played a role in his detainment.

Vavilova was detained alongside Durov last Saturday by French authorities. Durov, the Russian-born founder of Telegram, is currently under investigation for alleged crimes related to his messaging platform, which has been criticized for its failure to curb illegal activities. Telegram has maintained that Durov has “nothing to hide,” despite the ongoing inquiry.

Durov flew from Paris to Baku

Durov had flown into Paris from Baku, Azerbaijan, planning to enjoy dinner in the French capital. He was accompanied by a bodyguard and personal assistant, as usual. However, his sudden arrest has sparked a wave of speculation, particularly regarding Vavilova’s involvement. Internet sleuths have dubbed her "mysterious," and some suggest that her videos and posts may have inadvertently led authorities to Durov.

Who is Juli Vavilova?

The 24-year-old Vavilova, who is based in Dubai, has been linked to Durov in several of their recent travels across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan. The pair had arrived in France together, flying into Le Bourget airport near Paris, only to be apprehended shortly afterward by law enforcement. Her Instagram account, where she posted photos from their trips, has become a focal point of speculation, with many wondering if her posts revealed their whereabouts to authorities.

A source close to the case expressed shock that Durov had entered France despite the warrant against him, suggesting that he might have felt “a sense of impunity.”

Baptiste Robert, the CEO of Predicta Lab, a company combating online misinformation, reposted a video originally shared by an OSINT account, Amir Intel. In the clip, Vavilova is seen thanking her friends for helping her navigate Russian sanctions through cryptocurrency payments. This has raised further questions about her potential involvement in the case.

While speculation continues to swirl about whether Vavilova and Durov were romantically involved, no concrete evidence has emerged to confirm this. However, the two were seen engaging in similar activities—driving race cars and practicing shooting—before their arrest, with both posting from the same locations on social media.

In a livestream, Vavilova openly discussed how her friends helped her sidestep Russian sanctions by using cryptocurrency. “When Russia went under sanctions, my smart friends, I’m really glad that I have my smart friends around me who educate me about crypto, who give me opportunities, and other stuff. He just told me, the same day, send all the crypto to trust the wallet,” she said during the broadcast.
