Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo expressed support for the "Hands Off" rallies held throughout the United States on Saturday. The rallies, which were carried out in over 1,200 cities, were brought about by over 150 civil rights organizations, labor unions, and LGBTQ+ activists. The demonstrators marched against President Donald Trump's administration and billionaire Elon Musk, who have been one of Trump's strongest supporters of his economic and regulatory platform.
The protests were prompted by Trump's executive orders and plans to reshape the government, which have been denounced as part of the right-wing agenda Project 2025. This project aims to expand presidential power and eliminate key civil service protections. Protesters also protested Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare, with some fearing that Trump's policies will drain these programs.
The "Hands Off" movement did not only see protests in the US but also cities like Berlin, Paris, and London in Europe. Foreign allies and American expatriates also made their voices heard for the movement, calling Trump's policies dictatorial and demoralizing to democracy.
Ruffalo posted a video of the protests on social media with the caption "A beautiful day". He also encouraged protesters, adding, "Take courage, you are not alone. Together we are powerful. This is just the start".
