In a tragic incident in Madagascar on Friday, around 13 people, including seven children, were killed in a crowd stampede at a stadium in the capital city of Antananarivo, according to the Red Cross and local members of parliament.13 killed, 107 injured in stampede at stadium in MadagascarBriefing about the incident, opposition MP Hanitra Razafimanantsoa said on a local radio station, “So far 13 people have been killed and 107 injured.”The Red Cross, who were present on the scene, said, “We dont yet have the final list. Seven minors died.”Initially, the Indian Ocean nations prime minister, Christian Ntsay, put the toll at “12 dead and some 80 injured.”What happened at the stadiumReportedly, the stampede happened at the entrance to the Barea stadium where a crowd of nearly 50,000 spectators arrived to attend the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games.However, the cause of the stampede was not known immediately but the Red Cross said the toll could climb.Speaking to the media, Antsa Mirado, a communications manager with the Red Cross said, “There were a lot of people at the entrance, which triggered a stampede.”President Rajoelina urges minute silence over deathsMeanwhile, Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina, who was present at the opening ceremony, called for a minutes silence.In a televised address, the president said, “A tragic event occurred because there was pushing. There were injuries and deaths at the entrance.”Footage of the tragedy has been circulated on the internet, showing dazed and shocked people trying to locate their shoes piled amongst objects lost in the deadly crush, while some stood packed with spectators.Indian Ocean Island GamesThe Indian Ocean Island Games are a multi-disciplinary competition being held in Madagascar until September 3.They have been staged every four years on different islands in the southwest Indian Ocean for around 40 years.
