The destruction follows North Korea’s recent pledge to permanently close off its southern border, heightening tensions between the two nations.

South Korea responds to road demolition

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that North Korea “conducted an explosive operation aimed at blocking the connection roads” at the border on Tuesday. In response, the South Korean military conducted counter-fire south of the military demarcation line.

South Korea's military released video footage showing plumes of white and gray smoke rising from an explosion near the border town of Kaesong. Another video depicted similar activity on a coastal road near the eastern border. Although the roads and railways between the two countries have been closed for years, North Korea’s actions were reportedly aimed at reinforcing its national security and preventing potential conflict.

Heightened border tensions

North Korea has taken several aggressive steps recently, with leader Kim Jong Un labeling South Korea as the country’s "principal enemy." The regime has deployed fresh mines, anti-tank barriers, and missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads along the heavily militarized border, further exacerbating the situation.

North accuses Seoul of drone activity

On Saturday, North Korea accused South Korea of using drones to drop anti-regime propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. South Korea initially denied the drone allegations but has not commented further. Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned of a "horrible disaster" if such drone activities continue.

In response to the drone allegations, Kim convened a security meeting on Monday to address what North Korea called a "serious provocation" and to outline potential military responses, according to the state-run KCNA news agency.
