New Delhi: During a state visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang on Wednesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared his country's steadfast support for Russia's military operations in Ukraine. Quoted by Russian news agencies, Kim emphasized North Korea's “full support and solidarity to the Russian government, army, and people in carrying out the special military operation in Ukraine to protect sovereignty, security interests, and territorial integrity.”

Concerns over potential arms deal

Putin's visit has sparked concerns regarding a potential arms deal between the two nations. Speculations suggest that North Korea might supply Russia with critical munitions for its ongoing conflict in Ukraine in exchange for economic aid and technological transfers that could enhance Kim’s nuclear and missile programs. Kim praised Russia's "important role and mission in preserving strategic stability and balance in the world," and underscored the need to strengthen strategic cooperation amid the rapidly evolving global landscape.

Signing of strategic partnership treaty

Russian state media reported that Putin and Kim signed a "strategic partnership treaty" following their discussions in Pyongyang. Putin mentioned that the countries had prepared a foundational document for future relations, replacing earlier bilateral agreements and declarations signed in 1961, 2000, and 2001. Specific details of the new treaty were not disclosed.

Exchange of gifts

During the visit, the leaders exchanged gifts, with Kim receiving a tea set and a luxury Russian-made Aurus car. The nature of Putin's gifts, hinted to be related to his image, such as busts, was not revealed.

Western concerns and sanctions

The strengthening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have alarmed the West, amid suspicions that Russia is using North Korean weaponry in its military campaign in Ukraine. Both nations are currently subject to economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council, the United States, and its Western allies.

Historic meeting and oublic reception

North Korean state media celebrated the meeting as a historic event, showcasing the "invincibility and durability" of the friendship and unity between the two nations. Large crowds welcomed Putin’s motorcade with chants of "Welcome Putin" and displays of flowers and national flags.

Putin's praise for bilateral relations

Putin, who last visited North Korea 24 years ago, lauded the "close friendship" between the two countries, built on "equality and respect of mutual interests." He also highlighted their shared resistance against the "imperialist hegemonistic policies of the US and its satellites against the Russian Federation."
