Kamala Harris (X/KamalaHarris)
In a historic move, US Vice President Kamala Harris has clinched the 2024 Democratic National Convention, securing a majority of delegate votes, as reported by the Washington Post. The official announcement from Democratic Party leaders confirmed Harris as the party's presidential nominee, concluding an unprecedented nomination process initiated after the former Democratic frontrunner withdrew just two weeks prior.
Kamala Harris expressed her gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "I am honoured to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. This campaign is about people coming together, fueled by love of country, to fight for the best of who we are." She will formally accept the nomination next week.

President Joe Biden praised Harris in a post on X, calling her selection as vice president one of his best decisions. "Now that she will be our party's nominee, I couldn't be prouder," he added.
Meanwhile, it is important to note that over 4,000 convention delegates had until Monday to cast their ballots, with no other candidates qualifying to challenge Harris. This decisive nomination marks a significant milestone, as Harris becomes the first woman of colour to lead a major presidential ticket in the United States.
Harris officially declared her candidacy for the presidential election on July 27, emphasizing her commitment to a "people-powered campaign" that she believes will triumph in November. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison announced Harris's nomination, noting that she crossed the majority threshold shortly after online voting commenced.
Following President Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the race on July 21 and his endorsement of Harris, Democratic leaders swiftly devised a new nomination process. This process allowed any candidate to run if they secured 300 delegate signatures, including no more than 50 from any single delegation. Despite this, no other Democratic politicians managed to gather the necessary support to challenge Harris.
To expedite the nomination process, the Democratic National Committee opted for a virtual vote instead of waiting for the party convention in Chicago on August 19-22. This decision was initially driven by legal ambiguities in Ohio’s early ballot deadlines but remained in place even after Ohio amended its timeline.
Harris's nomination marks her as the second person of colour and the second female to head a major presidential ticket in American history, following Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, respectively. Harris, of Black and Indian American heritage, has faced recent attacks from Donald Trump regarding her racial identity, claims which lack evidence.
