New Delhi: Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the majority support needed to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee at the upcoming convention. President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race, citing concerns about his age and health and simultaneously endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, on Sunday. Biden pledged to remain in office as president until his term ends on Jan. 20, 2025.

Harris secures majority support

Recently, an associated press survey revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the backing of 2,538 delegates, surpassing the required 1,976 needed to win the nomination. As no other candidates received votes only 57 delegates remained undecided. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison confidently predicted that the party will have a presidential nominee by August 7. While delegates may still switch their allegiance before the deadline, Harris's significant lead makes her a leading candidate.

Harris begins campaign by attacking Trump

In her first public address since the endorsement, Kamala Harris delivered a fiery campaign debut, pledging to take on Donald Trump with the same prosecutorial zeal she showcased in the courtroom. ""I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain,"  Harris declared to campaign staff, just 28 hours after President Joe Biden, 81, exited the 2024 presidential race and threw his support behind her.

She tweeted, "Tonight, I am proud to have earned the support needed to become our party’s nominee. Over the next few months, I'll be travelling across the country talking to Americans about everything on the line. I fully intend to unite our party and our nation, and defeat Donald Trump."
