PM Justin Trudeau to leave for Canada on Tuesday afternoon, technical jet issue resolved

(Update 2:11 pm): The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to fly back to Canada on Tuesday afternoon as the technical issue with his plane has been resolved, authorities said.

Mohammad Hussain, Press Secretary of Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed the development to ANI. “The technical issue with the plane has been resolved. The plane has been cleared to fly. The Canadian delegation is expected to depart this afternoon,” Hussain said.

The second plane – routed via Italy – was to land at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi airport later today but that was diverted to the United Kingdom.

Justin Trudeau still stuck in India due to jet glitch after G20 Summit

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is stranded in India after the end of G20 Summit as his plane faced technical glitches which delayed his travel back home. A backup plane and spare parts are en route to India for Trudeau. This development has not been taken very well by some politicians in Canada who blamed Trudeau and called this a strain in the India-Canada relationship. Moreover, New Delhi has not been entirely warm towards Trudeau with a tersely worded statement describing India’s “strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada” being issued on Sunday.

Trudeau’s stay after G20 Summit

As per media reports will either fly home on the backup plane or wait for the original plane to be repaired, said a government official. The official declined to give details about the exact problem with the plane and what exactly needs replacing.

The plane involved in the current debacle is a CC-150 Polaris, one of several modified Airbus A310-300 the Canadian armed forces uses for its VIPs.

According to media reports, Trudeau’s office said “Upon our departure for the airport, we were made aware by the Canadian Armed Forces that CFC001 was experiencing technical issues. ” Following this development Trudeau has been staying inside his hotel room in the Lalit hotel in New Delhi.

The ministry of external affairs confirmed that they had received no request for any other official engagements and the office of the minister of state who was assigned to receive Trudeau, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, also confirmed that his duty was simply to receive the Canadian Prime Minister at the airport on his arrival.

“The Canadian Armed Forces continue their best efforts to get the Canadian delegation home,” said the Prime Minister’s office. “Their latest update shows an earliest possible departure of Tuesday late afternoon. The situation remains fluid.”

Canadian politicians displeased with Trudeau

While Trudeau is stuck here in India after the G20 Summit, politicians back home are not happy with this incident and blamed Trudeau for straining the India-Canada relationship. Premier Scott Moe shared a letter on ‘X’(Twitter), written by Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison which talks about the damage Justin Trudeau has caused to the trade between India and Canada.

“Does Trudeau even understand the damage he is doing to our trade relationship with India – one of our most important trading partners? Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison wrote to the Federal Trade Minister last Friday to explain it” Scott wrote on X(Twitter).

In the letter written by Harrison it mentions that the Canadian PM had hit a pause on the trade deal with India to bring up foreign interference as Trudeau says that along with Russia and China, other countries including India have been interfering with the country’s internal matters.

The letter also mentions Trudeau’s 2018 visit to Delhi which has been regarded as a “diplomatic catastrophe” after it emerged that the Canadian High Commission had invited Jaspal Atwal, a Sikh extremist who had been convicted of attempting to assassinate an Indian politician on Canadian soil for Trudeau’s welcome dinner in Delhi.

The Canadian PM’s 2018 visit has been regarded as a ‘lavish family vacation’ and was also criticised for lack of official business meetings and insensitive use of Indian clothing.
