More than 60 students had to be rushed to a hospital after eating candies laced with cannabis in Jamaica, the country’s Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams said. The Caribbean country’s minister said on social media that the children consumed rainbow-coloured cannabis candy.

According to the social media post of Williams, the incident happened at Ocho Rios Primary School and said that several students were hospitalized after consuming the candy. Williams shared the picture of the candy packet of “full throttle rainbow sour belts,” which contained 100 milligrams of THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol. which is generally considered to be a high dose for an adult.

As per the education minister’s ‘X’ post, the parents of the students are all present at the hospital. She also said that one boy consumed only one candy and still ended up in the hospital. “That’s how potent this product is. DANGER!” she said.

She called the incident most unfortunate and said “I feel confident that together we will strengthen our safety & security regime to combat the unconscionable sale of marijuana-infused products to children” in one of her X(Twitter) posts.

Jamaica Cannabis law

In 2015 Jamaica had allowed the legal possession of cannabis up to 2 ounces (57 grams) for religious, medicinal and scientific purposes. The country also set up a licensing agency for the country’s legal medical cannabis industry.

A similar incident took place last week when around 90 children fell ill in South Africa after eating drug-laced muffins that officials said they had bought from a street vendor.
