New Delhi: Pakistans former prime minister, Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned, has officially applied to become the next chancellor of the University of Oxford, as confirmed by his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. According to Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesperson for PTI, Khan instructed his team to apply for this prestigious role.Imran Khan had given instructions that he would like to submit his application, and now the application scrutiny will take place, Bukhari stated. He emphasized the significance of the role, describing it as a ceremonial post with utmost prestige and importance. Given Khans popularity as a prominent Oxford alumnus, Bukhari noted that it would be brilliant to see him in this position.Oxford candidature The University of Oxfords website reveals that the list of candidates for the 10-year term as chancellor will be announced in October, with voting set for later that month. British media reports suggest that other prominent candidates include former foreign secretary William Hague and former EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson. This comes after Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, announced his decision to step down as Oxfords chancellor earlier this year.If he becomes chancellor, he would be the first of Asian descent, Bukhari pointed out, highlighting the historical significance of the potential appointment. He added that this achievement would not only be a moment of pride for Pakistan but also for the entire Asian region. Imran Khan, who graduated from Oxford in 1975 with a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics, has long been connected to the university.His cricket career and political prominence have kept him in the public eye, both in Pakistan and abroad.
