The brutal assault took place at the Sde Teiman detention center, a site notorious for reports of systematic torture, including rape, electric shocks, and starvation. The CCTV footage showing the soldiers' actions has fueled media coverage and public anger.

Question over soldiers involved

The reaction within Israel has been intense, but not solely focused on the crime. Much of the outrage is directed at the investigation and questioning of the soldiers involved. Politicians and reserve soldiers have protested, even storming a military base to demand the release of the accused soldiers, arguing for their right to commit such acts against prisoners.

Mohammed Deif died

This incident adds to a series of violent events involving key Hamas figures. Recently, the Israeli military announced the death of Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas' military wing, killed in an airstrike in Gaza. This came after the assassination of Hamas' political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.

What hapened on July 13?

On July 13, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Deif was neutralised in Khan Yunis during a targeted attack. Despite initial denials from Hamas, the IDF confirmed his death after an intelligence assessment. "The IDF announces that on July 13th, 2024, IDF fighter jets struck in the area of Khan Yunis, and following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was eliminated in the strike," read the military statement.
