The ongoing war between Israel and Palestine is now shaping up to take a darker turn. The Israeli army has ordered citizens of Gaza City to evacuate their homes as soon as possible by dropping thousands of leaflets on Wednesday. This move comes amid escalating ground battles and strikes targeting Hamas militants in the Palestinian territory’s main city.

The leaflets, addressed to "everyone in Gaza City," outlined routes to designated safe areas further south. Residents were warned that the urban area would "remain a dangerous combat zone" as the army continued its operations against Hamas targets. The evacuation order is part of a broader strategy to minimize civilian casualties and ensure the safety of Gaza City residents.

Safe Routes Provided

The Israeli army specified two safe roads that residents could use "quickly and without inspection" to reach shelters in Deir Al-Balah and Al-Zawiya. This effort follows the first formal evacuation order issued on June 27, with subsequent orders reinforcing the need for residents to move to safer zones. The intensified military actions followed the October 7 Hamas attacks on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people, mostly civilians. The attacks also saw 251 hostages taken, with 116 remaining in Gaza, including 42 whom the military believes are dead.

Since the offensive began, tens of thousands of residents have fled Gaza City, particularly from the eastern Shujaiya district. The latest evacuation orders cover central and western districts, where tanks and troops have advanced this week. The army reported attacking militants inside the vacated headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinians, UNRWA, and conducting strikes in Deir Al-Balah.

Concerns overseas

The United Nations has expressed alarm at Israel’s evacuation orders, pointing out that residents are being directed to zones where fighting is ongoing. The UN's concerns highlight the complex humanitarian situation as residents struggle to find safety amid continuous military operations.
