Israel Hamas conflict: United States wielded its veto authority at the United Nations Security Council, effectively obstructing a draft resolution presented by Algeria. The resolution aimed to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, as reported by Reuters.
Algeria's proposal sought an unconditional humanitarian ceasefire, whereas the US pushed for a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas. Despite garnering support from 13 of the 15 council members, the resolution faced a veto from the US, while Britain abstained from voting.
This marks the third instance of the US exercising its veto power since the commencement of the current conflict on October 7. The US had previously utilized its veto to block an amendment to a resolution in December, according to Reuters.

For a resolution to pass at the UN Security Council, it requires a minimum of nine affirmative votes without any opposition from the five permanent members: the US, UK, France, Russia and China.

Algeria's UN Ambassador, Amar Bendjama, advocated for the resolution, emphasizing its significance in upholding the Palestinians' right to life. Conversely, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed reservations, citing concerns that the resolution might impede ongoing negotiations involving the US, Egypt, Israel, and Qatar aimed at securing a pause in hostilities and the release of hostages.
The Algerian-drafted resolution did not tie the ceasefire to the release of hostages but separately called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all captives. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 29,000 fatalities, according to Palestinian authorities, and has displaced over 80 percent of the population, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour criticized the US veto, asserting that it enables Israel to continue its actions without repercussions. Meanwhile, Israel's UN Ambassador, Gilad Erdan, opposed the focus on a ceasefire, arguing that it would ensure Hamas's survival.
In response, the US proposed its own resolution, advocating for a temporary ceasefire contingent on the release of hostages and urging unimpeded humanitarian assistance.
The conflict erupted when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in casualties and hostages. In December, the UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, reflecting global concerns about the situation. This marks the second attempt by the US since October to address the crisis at the Security Council, after previous attempts faced opposition from Russia and China.
Despite traditionally supporting Israel, the US has abstained twice before, allowing resolutions supporting aid to Gaza and calling for cessation of hostilities to be adopted.
