Israel-Hamas conflict: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refuted recent media claims suggesting an imminent agreement with Hamas for the release of approximately 240 hostages.
Addressing the public, Netanyahu emphasised that, as of now, no deal has been reached with the terror group. He dismissed what he referred to as "a lot of incorrect reports" circulating in the media.
Speaking during a press conference, Netanyahu assured the Israeli public that if any deal were to materialise, updates would promptly be provided. The statement follows a five-day march by families of the hostages from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, concluding on Saturday. Netanyahu expressed solidarity with the families and invited them to meet with the war cabinet in the coming week.
The White House National Security Council Spokesperson, Adrienne Watson, acknowledged US efforts to broker a deal involving Israel, the US, and Hamas for the release of hostages. However, Netanyahu clarified that no deal was currently on the table. When questioned about a purported offer for the release of around 50 hostages, Netanyahu asserted that there was no such deal and reiterated the commitment to secure the release of all hostages.
"We're doing the utmost to bring back the most possible, including in stages, and we are united on this," Netanyahu stated. He emphasised the goal of reuniting whole families affected by the hostage situation.
Hamas militants seized approximately 240 hostages on October 7, crossing Gaza's militarised border into southern Israel. The hostages, spanning various age groups and including Thai and Nepali nationals, were taken amid a surge of violence resulting in casualties, with civilians being targeted at their homes and a music festival.
Recent reports from The Washington Post suggested that Israel, the US, and Hamas were nearing an agreement to free dozens of women and children held hostage in Gaza. The proposed deal would involve a five-day pause in hostilities.
