Israel–Hamas conflict: Amid the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict, European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday said that Israel had financed the creation of Palestinian militant group Hamas. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied such allegations.

The opposition of the Israeli government and some global media have accused the Netanyahu government of helping Gaza rulers Hamas for years, including by allowing funds for Gaza.

EU's foreign policy chief blames Israel

In a speech at the University of Valladolid in Spain, Borrell said, "Yes, Hamas was financed by the government of Israel in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah."

He also said that the only solution to the ongoing conflict included the creation of a Palestinian state.

Furthermore, he said, "We only believe a two-state solution imposed from the outside would bring peace even though Israel insists on the negative."

Borrell told the audience, "If we don't intervene strongly, the spiral of hate and violence will continue from generation to generation, from funeral to funeral, when the seeds of hate that are being sown in Gaza today grow."

What caused war between Hamas and Israel?

Earlier, Hamas carried out a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza on October 7 which killed 1400 people. The terror group also captured around 240 hostages on the deadliest day in Israel's history.

In response, the Israeli government launched a counteroffensive attack in which more than 24,700 Palestinians have since been killed, according to the official date from the Gaza health ministry.

However, Israel has criticised several countries, including Borrell's native Spain, for what it says is showing sympathy for Hamas.
