Israel-Hamas conflict: In a bid to bring an end to the devastating Israel-Hamas war, Egypt has proposed a phased release of hostages, and the formation of a Palestinian government of experts to administer the Gaza Strip. Speaking to media person, a senior Egyptian official disclosed the details.

Collaboration with Qatar

The media reports claimed that Egypt's proposal, developed in collaboration with Qatar has been formally submitted to key stakeholders, including Israel, Hamas, the United States, and European governments. The conflict, which erupted after Hamas attacked communities in southern Israel on October 7 caused widespread destruction in Gaza which claimed the lives of more than 20,400 Palestinians and displaced nearly the population of 2.3 million.

What are the key elements of the proposal?

The Egyptian initiative outlines a multifaceted approach to resolving the conflict and also charts a plan for post-war governance. The initial phase involves a cease-fire which will last up to two weeks, during which Hamas has to release 40 to 50 hostages in return, Israel will release 120-150 Palestinians who are currently held in its prisons, as stated by the Egyptian official.

Formation of a transitional government

Moreover, Egypt and Qatar will engage with all Palestinian factions, including Hamas, to reach an agreement on establishing a government of experts. This government would assume control of Gaza during a transitional period, allowing Palestinian factions to address internal disputes.

Diplomatic discussions

Egyptican official discussed with Ismail Haniyeh, the Qatar-based political leader of Hamas, during his recent visit to Cairo. Furthermore, they also discussed a roadmap to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
