The United States is reportedly considering retaliatory attacks against Iran-backed groups believed to be responsible for the recent drone attack on US troops in Jordan, which killed three soldiers. According to the sources, these attacks could begin in the coming days and involve multiple targets.
President Joe Biden faces pressure to respond forcefully, but experts suggest his options range from limited strikes against specific militants to broader actions against Iranian forces even within Iran.
However, there is no official confirmation has been given by the US government.
Meanwhile, the US has released the names of three troops killed by enemy in Jordan. Sgt William Jerome Rivers, 46, Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24 and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23 were killed when a drone hit Tower 22 in Jordan.
Meanwhile, John Kirby, the National Security Council spokesperson during a White House press briefing, said, "We are not looking for war with Iran; we are not seeking a conflict with the regime in a military way. We're not looking to escalate here. This attack over the weekend was escalatory; make no mistake about it -- and it requires a response, make no mistake about that. I will not get ahead of the president's decision-making."
The drone attack on US outpost in Jordan marks the first instance of US troops being killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the commencement of the Gaza war.
The attack targeted Tower 22 in Jordan, near the Syrian border, escalating an already precarious situation in the region. According to US officials, the drone responsible was launched by Iran-backed militants and seemed to originate from Syria, according to CNN.
It is to be noted here that tensions between the US and Iran have been high for some time, due to issues like the Iranian nuclear program and support for regional proxy groups and the attack in Jordan is likely to further escalate these tensions. There are concerns that any US strikes could lead to wider conflict in the region.
