US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a peace deal with Russia that could bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stating on Saturday that such an agreement could be achieved as early as next week.

Ongoing Negotiations and Diplomatic Efforts

Leavitt conveyed the administration’s focus on continuing negotiations with both parties involved in the conflict. "Right now, the president and his team are very much focused on continuing negotiations with both sides of this war to end the conflict. The president is very confident that we can get it done this week," she said. This statement signals a strong push from the White House to resolve the conflict swiftly, with efforts intensifying on both diplomatic and political fronts.

Trump’s Stance on Zelenskyy’s Role in Peace Talks

The timing of Leavitt's remarks aligns with Trump’s controversial comments regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump had previously indicated that Zelenskyy’s presence in the negotiations was not essential. "I don't think he's very important to be in the meetings. He has been there for three years. He makes it very hard to make deals," Trump said. Despite this, Trump reiterated that both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin would need to engage directly to facilitate the resolution of the conflict.

Possible Summit Between Trump and Putin

The prospect of a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has gained attention in light of Russia’s diplomatic moves. Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, revealed that preparations were underway for such a summit, which could address broader global issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, Ryabkov emphasized that the talks would require extensive preparatory work before a meaningful meeting could take place.

Diplomatic Talks and Conditions for Peace

Earlier this week, US and Russian officials convened in Saudi Arabia, where they agreed to focus on three primary goals: restoring diplomatic staffing at embassies, creating a support team for peace talks, and exploring opportunities for closer cooperation. Reports suggest that in order to end the conflict, Ukraine may need to reconsider its aspirations of joining NATO and relinquish a portion of its seized territory.

Despite this, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy has made it clear that Kyiv will not accept the terms of any peace talks in which Ukraine is not directly involved. President Trump, while acknowledging Russia's invasion of Ukraine, remains confident that the war is near its conclusion, stating, "I think that thing is going to end. It's got to end." As the White House remains committed to resolving the Ukraine conflict, Trump’s bold statements, coupled with ongoing diplomatic engagements, suggest that the US may be closer than ever to bringing about an end to the war. While challenges remain, the international community is closely watching as negotiations evolve, with the hope that peace may soon be within reach.
