Iraq launches five rockets towards US military base in Syria; Attack escalates Mideast tensions

A day after the return of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani from US, Iraq launched a rocket towards the US military base in Syria. At least five rockets were fired from the Iraqi city of Zummar towards a US military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday. The attack against US forces is the first since the beginning of February amid the ongoing Gaza war. 

Iraqi forces investigate launch of rockets

Iraqi forces are conducting a wide-ranging search and inspection operation west of Nineveh near the Syrian border to try to capture the perpetrators. At leasy one rocket landed at the base and the attack was the third to target the same site within 24 hours. However, a rocket launcher was found placed on the back of a small truck which was parked in Zummar border town with Syria. However, there is no report of any casualties and no group has claimed responsiblity. 

Iraq attacks at US military base

After firing rockets at the American military base from the border of Iraq, the attackers fled in another vehicle. This attack was carried out by a terrorist group from Iraq. The group says it will continue to carry out similar attacks on American military bases in Syria. Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that several rockets were fired at the US military base in Syria from the border with Iraq.

Explosion at military base

A military officer said that the truck that was hit by the bombing has been captured. Initial investigation has revealed that it was destroyed in the airstrike itself. Earlier on Saturday, there was an explosion at a military base in the early hours of Saturday, in which an Iraqi security personnel was killed.
Before this, Israel had launched a counter attack on April 19, just a week after Iran's attack. Israel had fired missiles at many cities of Iran. However, Iran had denied any kind of attack.
