Where was Epicenter?

The US Geological Survey identified the earthquake's epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles). Iran, located atop several tectonic plates, frequently experiences seismic activity, making earthquakes a common natural hazard. This latest earthquake is part of a long history of seismic disturbances in Iran. Just last year, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in the mountainous northwest region killed three people and injured over 800, with areas near the Turkish border being particularly affected.

Historical earthquake tragedies

One of the most devastating earthquakes in Iran's history occurred in 2003 in the southeastern city of Bam. This 6.6 magnitude earthquake resulted in the deaths of more than 31,000 people. The frequent occurrence of such disasters has underscored the need for improved disaster preparedness in the country.

Enhancing disaster preparedness

In response to the frequent seismic activity, Iran has undertaken efforts to enhance its disaster preparedness. These measures include retrofitting old buildings to withstand earthquakes and improving early warning systems. The aim is to reduce the impact of future earthquakes and protect the lives and property of Iran's citizens.
