Indira Gandhi was great, I'm not: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

New Delhi: In a recent response to a question drawing parallels with other prominent women leaders, Sheikh Hasina, the recently re-elected prime minister of Bangladesh, emphasised that her gender has not hindered her commitment to public service. Addressing the query, she asserted that when governing a nation, considerations about gender should not be a limiting factor.

Leadership unconstrained by gender norms

Sheikh Hasina, now serving her fifth term as Bangladesh's prime minister, shared her perspective on overcoming preconceived notions related to gender in leadership roles. She stated, "When I took over power, I had heard many things about it. But when I work, when I start working, I never thought I am a woman, I had restrictions, no." The prime minister highlighted her focus on working for the people, guided by a sense of responsibility rather than being confined by societal expectations associated with gender.

A motherly approach to governance

Responding to the question comparing her to other influential women leaders such as Indira Gandhi, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and Golda Meir, Sheikh Hasina underscored her simplicity, considering herself a common person. She expressed her belief in approaching governance with a motherly affection, drawing parallels with the care and responsibility that mothers extend to their families. Sheikh Hasina shared, "With motherly affection, I look after my people. And I try to assist them and help them."

She stated, "I am not saying I have not got much, but one thing, I always feel (is) my responsibility for my people that I have to serve them."
