Tokyo, Japan: In response to a powerful earthquake and subsequent tsunami warnings in Japan, the Indian Embassy in Tokyo has established an emergency control room and issued emergency contact numbers for Indian citizens.

The earthquake, measuring 7.5 in magnitude, prompted a tsunami warning along the country's western coast.

Earthquake Details

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, struck central Japan, particularly affecting the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. The tremors were felt in central Tokyo as well. The incident occurred at 4:10 pm local time, 42 km North-East of Anamizu, Japan, with a depth of 10 km.

Tsunami Warnings and Impact

Tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui, and Hyogo prefectures along the Japan Sea Coast. Waves measuring 80 cm reached Toyama Prefecture, while 40-meter waves reached Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. Sado Island in Niigata also experienced the impact.

Government Instructions and Preparedness

The Japan Prime Minister's Office issued instructions for officials to provide timely and accurate information to the public, facilitate evacuation measures, and prevent damage. The directive emphasised assessing the situation, coordinating with local governments, and prioritising human life in emergency responses.
