Indian-American tech billionaire Vinod Khosla has accused Elon Musk of "sour grapes" over his lawsuit against OpenAI, suggesting the Tesla CEO is bitter about not getting into AI early enough. Musk was once OpenAI's largest donor when it was a non-profit, while Khosla became the first VC to invest when it went private in 2019.

Musk is suing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in California Superior Court, alleging betrayal of the company's original mission. The complaint claims OpenAI has prioritized profits over benefiting humanity, constituting a breach of contract. Musk says Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman initially pitched an open-source non-profit but have since pivoted to monetization.

Khosla slammed Musk's legal action on Twitter, writing: "With Elon Musk, feels like a bit of sour grapes in suing OpenAI, not getting in early enough, not staying committed and now a rival effort. Like they say if you can't innovate, litigate and that's what we have here."

The Sun Microsystems co-founder added that "the Elon of old" would have focused on competing through innovation rather than litigation. "Elon of old would be building with us to hit the same goal," Khosla tweeted.

Musk fired back, dismissing Khosla's criticism. "Vinod doesn't know what he is talking about here," the billionaire entrepreneur replied on the platform now known as X.

The public spat highlights the intensifying battle for supremacy in the burgeoning AI industry. As OpenAI's ChatGPT has surged to the forefront, Musk appears determined to challenge its dominance through both legal and technological means. But some onlookers see his lawsuit as a sign of frustration rather than a principled stand.
