Outgoing Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu has observed that bilateral relations have intensified, matured, and expanded enormously. The relationship between the world’s two largest democracies is now touching almost all spheres of human activity, Sandhu added.

Speaking at a farewell hosted for him in Washington DC on Wednesday, Sandhu noted the transformation has specifically happened over the last decade across areas like technology, trade, defense, space, healthcare, etc.

Indian envoy Sandhu's legacy

Sandhu has served in the US thrice during his over 35-year diplomatic career, most recently as India's envoy for 4 years. Recounting challenges after 1998's nuclear tests and sanctions, he praised the US Congress' role in rebuilding ties. During his tenure, he interacted extensively with over 300 Congressmen and 75 Senators.

“We have still reached the tip of the iceberg. There is so much to be covered,” underscored 61-year-old Sandhu, implying the immense untapped potential.

Sandhu recieves praise from US leadership

Multiple US lawmakers applauded Sandhu’s efforts in elevating the strategic partnership. Senator Mark Warner, Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus, hoped for Sandhu’s continued public service despite retirement.

John Podesta, a senior presidential advisor, thanked the envoy for advancing cooperation, especially on clean energy.

Senators Jon Ossoff and Amy Klobuchar highlighted Sandhu’s role in resolving trade and agriculture disputes.

Indian diaspora connect in US

Nisha Desai Biswal, US International Development Finance Corporation’s Deputy CEO, recalled the envoy urging more ambition in ties way back when she was a Congressional staffer. She accentuated Sandhu's stress on diaspora ties in the relationship.

Over 35 years, Sandhu has worked on binding societal ties beyond just the government-to-government track.

At the event, Sandhu received an award from the global Sikh organization Buddha Dal, commemorating his family’s contributions and legacy. It coincided with the 200th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Baba Phoola Singh.

Leaving behind India-US turbulent history, looking for a brighter horizon

The envoy recollected how even after 1998's challenging phase, he remained convinced of resilience and progress in India-US relations. His interactions with US stakeholders during four years as Ambassador have engendered similar optimism.

With both nations poised for a continuous upward trajectory, Sandhu's legacy will be defined by his vision of shared prosperity, underlined by strategic convergence and on-ground collaboration.

The effusive praise indicates the envoy's standing as a seasoned diplomat driven by the firm belief in India-US ties as an indispensable partnership.
