New Delhi: The Defense Ministry on Monday signed a major contract worth ₹26,000 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero engines to power the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Su-30MKI fighter jets. This landmark deal is seen as a significant boost to the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative, reinforcing the nation's defense manufacturing capabilities.
The aero engines will be manufactured by HAL’s Koraput division in Odisha, ensuring the continued operational efficiency of the IAF’s Su-30MKI fleet. These engines play a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the combat readiness of one of India's most powerful fighter jets.
The contract signing took place in the presence of high-ranking officials, including Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, underscoring the importance of the agreement for India's defense infrastructure.
