New Delhi: Russia and China are collaborating on an ambitious project to develop a nuclear power plant on the Moon to support future lunar settlements. In a new development, a report from the Russian news agency TASS has sparked curiosity, suggesting that India might be exploring the opportunity to participate in this groundbreaking project.
The initiative, spearheaded by Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, aims to build a small nuclear reactor on the Moon capable of generating up to half a megawatt of energy. This energy solution is crucial for sustaining long-term human settlements and scientific research on the lunar surface, as it provides continuous power even during the moon's 14-day long nights when solar power would be ineffective.
Rosatom’s chief, Alexey Likhachev, emphasized the potential for international collaboration, noting that both China and India are keen to be involved. “Our Chinese and Indian partners are very interested in this,” Likhachev said during a lecture. However, there has been no official statement from India or its space agency, ISRO, regarding any discussions.
For India to officially join the project, several factors need to be considered, including diplomatic relations with China, technological contributions from all parties, financial investments, and a clear regulatory framework. Additionally, strict safety protocols must be in place to mitigate any risks associated with deploying nuclear technology in space. If India does join the initiative, this collaboration could mark a significant leap in space exploration, propelling the vision of a sustainable human presence on the Moon forward.
